Why does my website look like everyone else's?

You spent the weekend on it. You picked the photos. You changed the font twice.

And then you looked at a competitor's site, and felt a little sick. Same layout. Same big photo with text on top. Same three boxes underneath: "About. Services. Contact."

You're not imagining it. And it's not your fault.

The real reason: it started as someone else's site

Here's the thing nobody tells you on the template page: a website looks like where it started.

On Reddit, web designers say it plainly: if you can still recognise the template, you're not done. One of them deletes 30 to 40% of a template before they call it theirs. That's a lot of Sundays.

And the new AI sites? Designers are already complaining they all look identical. Same soft gradients. Same rounded cards. Same friendly headline. Fast, yes. Forgettable, also yes.

The deeper reason: you're dimming your light

This one stings a bit.

Very often we have this habit of dimming what makes us different. We look at what others in our field do, and we play it safe. Same words ("passionate", "tailored solutions", "holistic"). Same stock photo of a laptop and a plant. Because standing out feels risky.

But authentic, by definition, means self. A brand that's built on you can't look like everyone else. A brand built on "what everyone in my industry does" can't look like anything else.

Your difference isn't something to invent. It's what you already do naturally, without effort, that others find hard. The way you talk. The things you notice. The mess you're proud of. That's what your website should show.

5 ways to make your website look like you

1. Stop looking at your industry

If you're a therapist, don't only look at therapists' websites. That's how everyone ends up the same. Look at fashion, magazines, hotels, perfume, restaurants. The most interesting sites borrow from far away.

2. Build a board of what moves you

Save every site, photo, font and colour that makes you feel something. Don't judge while you collect. Then look for the pattern: big serif type? Lots of white? Warm grain? Black and white? That pattern is your taste. Your taste is your brand.

Remember: inspired is not copied. Every artist learns by looking at others. You're not taking their style. You're finding yours.

3. Use your real words

Write the way you talk. If you'd never say "we deliver bespoke solutions" to a friend over coffee, don't write it. Describe your client's real life ("you answer emails from the school car park") instead of their job title. That's the copy people remember.

4. Use your real photos

Your hands. Your space. Your product in daylight. Your messy desk, if it's honest. One real photo beats ten perfect stock ones.

5. Start from your taste, not a template

This is the big one. Steps 1 to 4 make any website better. But if you start from a template, you'll spend hours fighting the bones.

That's why we built Big Cat, the authentic AI website builder. Instead of a template or a prompt, it starts from a design you love: a site from your board, a screenshot, your Pinterest. It keeps that design's “feeling” (proportions, type, space, mood), never its words, photos or logo, and builds your site with your words, in minutes.

Then you stay the artist. Talk to the cat, or move things yourself. The cat proposes, you decide.

The test

When someone asks for your link, what do you send?

If the answer is "my Instagram, the site isn't really me", your website isn't finished. Not because it's missing pages. Because it's missing you.

You grew. Your website didn't catch up. Let's fix that.

Questions people ask

Why do all websites look the same?

Because most start from the same templates, the same AI prompts, and the same habit of copying what others in the industry do. The bones show, even after you change colours and photos.

How do I make my website stand out?

Look outside your industry for inspiration, write the way you talk, use your own photos, and start from a design you love instead of a shared template.

Is it OK to be inspired by another website?

Yes. Being inspired by a style (white space, big type, a mood) is how every designer works. Copying another site's text, photos, logo or code is not OK. Big Cat takes only the “feeling” and never those.

Do AI websites all look the same?

Many do, because they're generated from short prompts that everyone writes in a similar way. An AI builder that starts from your own reference and your own words gives a very different result.
